Not that there are not enough blogs out there…. But for some reasons, I have a bit more time right now, its called “Inbetween Jobs”, so back here on WordPress. Still not happy with the theme. I’d love to see the width over the fullscreen, the font which is used in the in the sidebar is way too big but as I’m not very good at changing CSS it will stay until I found out how it goes. Ha.. and this leads me to my 1st blogpost after 1 year: My fave online apps this year.

finally I’m going to change to a selfhosted blog. should not be taken too long until everything has moved. All music related stuff including my DJ nights at Panke got a new home here: Support Your Local Ghetto

Is this really a future we’re heading towards? And how soon? Today’s reality isn’t quite there yet. After all, as soon as we leave our wifi zone, we have to resort to listening to – or “consuming” – whatever we own, we’ve bought or simply have stored on our hard drives or CDs. We haven’t yet reached the state of complete disconnection from physical media. So, how long will it take until we can really get everything and anything we want from the cloud? What is the state of the art of consumption of creative works?

This session isn’t intended as a ranting against organizations like Germany’s performance rights organization, GEMA, to heckle the major industry. While it is important to show the point we’re at today, my broader focus is on a wider perspective of the future: to show the effect and possibilities, streaming can have on overall sales (in 360° models).

The discussion should also include the “utopia” of selling products with other models like micropayment and pay where you want and how you want on every platform.

Thesis: We would spend much more money if we just would have the possibility.

For twenty years, I have worked on all sides of the music biz, including 3½ years as editorial director of the small team that made up the German/Austrian iTunes music store. I started right after they opened in Germany/Austria.

Broadly put, my main interest currently is the “Future of Entertainment & Music”. That means looking at the strategies the industry is following and the digital culture that is evolving – and sometimes outpacing the industry. These include streaming services, recommendation sites, music platforms, social networks for sharing music inspirations, and so on. At this year’s Socal Media Week in Berlin I organzied and moderated a panel on the “Future of Entertainment” (see excerpts from my blog) and at last year’s A2N I organized and moderated a panel on the topic of the “Future of Record Shops” (see my review here)

I myself am a proud owner of 15,000 vinyl records and 160 GB of music on my hard drive. I obviously consider myself a collector, but that also means I dig for music just as much on the Internet as I did in record shops – almost on a daily basis. However, one thing has changed: for more than a year I have been subscribing to Spotify, and my behaviour has been altered to the extent that I won’t buy anything, e.g. an “album”, unless I’ve listened to it from beginning to end.

The reason for not posting anything in the last months: I started working at this awesome company in Berlin as a Junior Product- / Projectmanager and right now I’m also the Social Media Lady. And what can I say.. I’m happy! Great company, great people, fantastic projects . I can learn a lot and become a kick ass PM. YEAH!

It was not so easy for me to decide, which way workwise I should go after my job at iTunes as editorial chief was finished. The same job? No way…. Work in the musik biz? Hmm… naa… not really. I worked on nearly all sides in this biz and as it looks like it has to reinvent itself, this was no perspective for me. It takes tooooo long. So I did some freelance jobs, tried to convince lables, artists that the internet is not a bad thing, I tryed to help, some did well some not and some didn’t pay me.  errrgh…

In the same time I started going to all this conferences and barcamps, met a lot of very inspiring people and got totally into the “Internet of Things”. How it works and how it could be. So, I got deep into it and I really wanted to do something with it. Workwise. Not only as a user, reading all the interesting stuff about the future. I wanted to work actively WITH this new technology I’m so happy to be part of. But it took me a very long time to find out, what this “work” should be. So I suffered a lot,  cause of not knowing what to work. I have not studied, I’m not in the twenty’s and of course I’m really bad in selfpromotion.With the help of very good friends, I got my CV done correctly, learned how to write a cover letter and finally I sent out some applications. And so…it comes.

A lot of work is comin up now and there is not too much time left for haning out in the internetz but nevertheless I’m gonna do a panel for the A2N – conference in Berlin about “Streaming vs. Downloading”. Read the next post about it.

Update: me beeing a kickass PM is a bit delayed. I will kill all words which describes my social media skills out of my CV to become the real chance to become a KICKASS Product / Projectmanager. On the hunt again for this…

My Space…..

The yesterday’s MySpace presentation of  at the SocialMediaClub Berlin made me think about this once super popular plattform for musicians  and how it lost its relevance. I mean it’s still relevant. When I look for a band the best way to get informations about it  is to check them out on MySpace. This is good. But all the social ideas behind it are gone. Its not really possible to communicate with the fans, due to all the spam and “hi, thanks for the add, check out my songs” messages etc… maybe this will happen also to the Facebook Fanpages, but for now, Facebook seems to be the better plattform for interacting with your fans.
The next move for MySpace is to become a streaming service, which is, of course, a good idea. The future of listening to music is streaming. But will it get back all the reputation it has lost due to the lack of usability, screaming banners, spam etc.?

I think the future of social music should be an aggregated platform where the content is coming from all different sources, like here at “musweet” with all its sharing features. But I would like to go a little more further: 1 platform where you can listen, download free AND payed content. e.g. you can watch via a youtube feed a video, listen via a spotify api to some songs, buy physical stuff or just pay for a stream for documentation / movie. I don’t mind to pay, I just don’t want to search on thousands of different websites. I know, it sounds like a dream and we are not really close to this due to the ongoing copyright discussions.

Yesterday I was at the Berlin Social Media Club, a small event (100 people only) which takes place more or less regular every 2 months in Berlin. This time the focus was on social music and as I did a panel with a similar topic this year in february I was very curious to see whats going on here. Participations:

The audience participation was really good. Many questions where raised, some answered some not. But everybody seems to have the same idea about MySpace. Its just not a communication tool anymore but a “Band-Info” page. The most interesting project (next to Soundcloud which I already know and use since years) where presented from to young dudes, a music streaming service called: MUSWEET. It keeps track of what artists and bands publish on the  social web. It’s right now in beta and it comes very close to my idea of an aggregation plattform:

How does it work?

On we’re listing music artists from all kinds of genres.

After collecting basic data we enrich it with publicly available profiles on social media platforms (twitter, facebook, myspace, youtube, etc.). This happens either through Google’s Social Graph API, active research by our editorial team and most importantly suggestions by you, our users.

A distributed network of crawlers retrieves tweets, posts, videos in a realtime fashion and evaluates them.The results then get displayed on the site, for example as “Big Mover” (biggest gain of contacts during a specific timeframe) in a genre, the most popular topic or other interesting bits of information.

Reaching completeness will be a big ongoing goal, but we’re at it. You can help by using the “Suggest an artist” function at the top right of the page.

So, maybe MySpace can offer its service to be the bandinfo behind musweet…hehe…. like AllMusicGuide. The main concern I have here is the truly unsolved and super unhappy GEMA situation right here. They still want to be payed per stream and are not into a flat payment as they do with the radios. It just can’t work out that a plattform like this has to pay for every stream. This situation makes me really angry as it feels like it stops all innovative projects over here. Lets make a riot!!!!

The 2nd project I heard about, is MUFIN, an automated music recommendation engine. It works with digital fingerprinting based technology on the mood of the listener. So if you feel like in a mood for lets say: Feist, it plays all songs from your library which are in the mood of this song. Its a bit like the iTunes Genius. Its all very mathematical and unfortunately the player is only for a pc right now but I’m very curious to check it out as soon as its available for mac.

So, this is Berlin. While they talk about MySpace and VZ (sorry, I didn’t get this discussion at all, it sounded very odd….) I heard about 2 brand new innovative plattforms. I really like this.

a very quiet an deep electronic – dubstep mix which I compiled for this years NEXT10 conference, 1st time, in Berlin at the “Station”. The resonances in this big industrial hall was hard but once again the certain sounds of dubstep turned out to be  a positive effort  It sounded differently everywhere i walked but it was always nice.
